Would you say $91,000 is a fair price for a limited edition, Iron Man-themed Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge?
The person who bid $91,000 for it and won it on the JD.com auction site (belonging to China’s second largest retail company) certainly thinks so. The phone is normally sold for $1,079, but the auction received 90,000 bids above that value.
Considering that the phone is limited edition, and that this particular phone’s serial number is 66, it is clear to see why the Chinese would consider it very special – the number 6 is a lucky number in China, and 66 even more so. The red-and-gold tones of the Iron Man theme are also well-liked in China, as the two colors are thought to represent luxury and generosity.
The phone was released in May as a part of the promotional campaign for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the next chapter of the Marvel movie universe. Samsung’s been trying hard to fix their reputation with smart phone users – instead of the plastic bodies they favored so far, they made metal and glass bodies for The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.
Another Iron Man limited edition phone has sold for $35,000, and eBay has listed a lot of others priced at several thousands of dollars.
